Philip Ziffer, a longtime resident of Schenectady, passed away on July 3, 2017 at the age of 92 in North Wales, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Joseph M. and Lena Ziffer. He was a Lt. Jr. Grade in the United States Navy and graduated from Union College’s V-12 program with a degree in electrical engineering.
He was the co-owner of Joseph M. Ziffer & Sons, Inc., Capitol Paint & Hardware, a business founded by his father, which he operated for over 40 years along with his brother Paul, who predeceased him.
Philip was active in communal affairs and served as President of the Schenectady Jewish Community Center, President of the Schenectady Jewish Community Council/Jewish Federation of Greater Schenectady, and as President of Schenectady Rotary East. He also served on the boards of the local B’nai Brith, United Fund, Daughters of Sarah Foundation and Congregation Beth Israel.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Rose Rosen Ziffer, and is survived by his children: Lawrence (Flo) Ziffer, Ruth (Richard) Genter, & Jay Ziffer, and by his grandchildren: Yosef (Esti) Ziffer, David (Atara) Ziffer, Ari (Devora) Ziffer, Elisheva Ziffer, Daniel (Dana) Genter and Rebecca Genter, and by eleven great grandchildren, all of whom will miss him more than words can possibly express.
Graveside funeral services were held today, Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Beth Israel Cemetery, 308 Abbottsford Road, Rotterdam, NY at 2:00 p.m. The period of mourning will be observed in Baltimore, Maryland
