~~Mary Nachison (Hertzman), daughter of the late Jacob and Berta Hertzman, sister of the late Joan Dessey and wife to the late Nathan Nachison passed away on October 26, 2017 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home after a brief illness. She was 95 years old. Mary is survived by her son Dr. Jon Nachison, daughter-in-law, Sharon Nachison, daughter Tina Klugman, grandchildren, Emily, Rebecca, Daphna, Michael, and Lia and great-grand-daughter, Naima.
Mary was a strong, determined woman who was a true survivor. Born in Berlin, Germany, the young teen managed to escape with her father and sister to the United States in January 1939. Not long after her arrival, Mary survived a fire and only months later a near-drowning when a bridge collapsed and the car in which she had been a passenger plunged into the water.
A year or two after these traumatic events, love came to Mary when the handsome Nathan Nachison spotted the petite, pretty 19-year-old refugee who was then a shop girl in Lerner’s Department Store. A few years later, the two married and settled in Albany, New York to raise a family. Mary worked alongside Nathan at the Empire Paper Corporation he had established. She quickly learned all aspects of the business and after his death in 1982, Mary took over the company which she ran solo for almost two decades. Mary also put her sharp, shrewd mind to positive effect by serving on Temple Israel’s youth commission and later becoming one of the Temple’s vice presidents in a time when few women were in leadership roles.
At age 78, after closing Empire Paper, Mary decided to reinvent herself and snagged a job working for Petite Sophisticate. With her characteristic enthusiasm, Mary threw herself into her new-found career, delighting customers and staff with her knack for matching outfits and accessories. Before too long, she was winning praise from the district office as being the salesperson with the highest number of monthly sales! To top it off, still slim-figured, style-conscious Mary aged eighty plus got to participate in several fashion shows for the company!
Funeral services for Mary Nachison will be held at the gravesite at the Temple Israel cemetery on Monday October 30th at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Daughters of Sarah Senior Community on 180 Washington Avenue Ext. Albany, NY 12203
