Obituary of Gerald Morrison


Gerald (Gerry) J. Morrison, 86, of Lake Worth, FL, formerly of Latham, NY passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Tuesday, April 25, 2017.  He was born Gerd Moritzon in Hamburg, Germany February 7, 1931 and immigrated to the United States with his parents Max and Elsie (Kahn) Morrison in September, 1938.  Gerry married R. Manja Spiro in NYC in 1957 and moved to Latham, NY in 1964.  He was a devoted son, husband, father and Opa. Gerry grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor’s degree in Geology. Gerry served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Rand McNally as a Cartographer and the City of New York as a City Planner prior to moving to Latham, NY where he worked as both a Urban and Coastal Planner for the NY State, Dept. of State for 30 years.  

Gerry's greatest joy was spending time with his family, His vast interests included listening to a wide variety of music, (especially Jazz), reading, traveling, playing golf, the Brooklyn Dodgers and then the NY Mets. In his retirement years he truly enjoyed being a bilingual tour guide in and around Albany and the Capital District, and as the jazz specialist at an upscale music store. He volunteered as a Citizens on Patrol (COP) for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office He also served on the Board of Directors for COBWRA in West Boynton Beach, FL and was the Growth Management Committee Chair 

Gerald was a longtime member of Congregation Ohav Shalom, Albany, NY and a member of Temple Shaarei Shalom, Boynton Beach, FL. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. Gerry was a charter member of both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the American Planning Association; not to mention, he was an active member in a plethora of other organizations and clubs throughout his life.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Elsie and Max, and his wife of 43 years, R. Manja Morrison. He is survived by his children Marc (Lori) Morrison of Saratoga Springs, NY, Rhonda (Jeff) Simons of Windsor, CT and David (Carol) Morrison of Lutherville, MD.; his seven grandchildren, Michelle, Rachel, Joshua, Randi, Carli, Rebecca and Max; and his wife of the past 14 years, Judith Arnow Morrison; as well as many cousins.

Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 1:00 PM.  Interment will follow in the Ohav Shalom Cemetery, Church Road, Guilderland, NY.

His entire family would like to thank the staff of TrustBridge for their compassion over the past two weeks.
