Obituary of Donald Davidoff

Donald B. Davidoff 82, died peacefully on Friday, May 5 2017 at St. Peter’s Hospital.  Born in Albany NY, the son of Herman and Ethel Davidoff, Don grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School.  It was there that he met the true love of his life and future wife, Joanne. Don went on to Dartmouth College, graduating in 1956.  He remained as devoted to the college as he did to his wife and family.  He then graduated from Albany Law School in 1959 and went on to begin his over 30 year career working for the State of New York.

Don is survived by his wife Joanne, his son Jeffrey, his grandchildren Max and Julia, and his daughters-in-law Barbara and Michelle.  Don was a devoted son-in-law to Harriet Dembo, and his love for Joanne was the center of his life.  Married for over 60 years, they were each other's best friend and constant companion.  Their love and commitment was a visible model for what true love can be.  Don treasured his family above all else, and his wisdom, wit, and enduring love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  He was the voice of praise when there was success and positivity, and support when there was difficulty.  In every way his family was shaped, nurtured and supported by his love.

Don was the first in his family to go to college.  He strongly believed in Dartmouth College and the principles of liberal arts education.  As an active alumnus he held several posts including Class Agent, District Enrollment Director, and Secretary and President of the local Dartmouth club.  In recognition of his work he received the school’s highest honor, the Dartmouth Alumni Award.

During his long and rewarding career with New York State Health Department, Don was particularly proud of his pioneering work on Hospice, and he later served on the Hospice board.  After retiring from the State Don began his second career as the Executive Director of Congregation Beth Emeth for 10 years.  He also served as Director of The Jewish Federation.

Don was a real sports enthusiast, with a particular love for basketball.  He was a local college basketball referee for over 25 years, and the friendships he made along the way lasted a lifetime.  Don was an avid golfer.  He loved time with his friends on the course, and served a term as President of Colonie Country Club.

The funeral service will be held at Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Road in Albany  on Sunday May 7th at 2:00 p.m.  The period of mourning will be observed at the Davidoff residence, 25 Wedgewood Lane Voorheesville following the service of interment and Monday and Tuesday evenings 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Those wishing to remember Don in a special way may send a donation to Congregation Beth Emeth or the charity of their choice in his name.
