Obituary of Ruth Sherman
Sherman, Ruth, “Ruthie” (Goldfarb), age 88, passed away on September 4, 2017, in the presence of her family, whom she truly and passionately cherished. Born May 28, 1929 in Albany, New York, Ruth grew up living above her parents’ (Jenny & Samuel Goldfarb) grocery store on South Pearl Street. She was predeceased by her five siblings—Dorothy Firsty, Rachel Roth, Leonard Goldfarb, Jacob Goldfarb, and Sanford “Bunny” Goldfarb. She leaves behind her three children, Gregory “Greg” (Eileen), Debra “Debbie,” and Michael “Mickey” (Dawn), as well as five grandchildren (Hali, Matthew, Ciara, Amber, and Sarah) and six great-grandchildren (Ian, Ronen, Shayna, Jake, Natalie, and Mattingly). Ruth was instrumental in the 1964 opening of The Ambassador restaurant in Albany, which she owned with Marvin Sherman. She took great pride in her work ethic, but more in her ability to be a loving mother (she even named sandwiches after her children on the restaurant’s menu). With her electric personality, Ruth became known as “the hostess with the mostest.” She loved her family with a beautiful intensity and always made sure they knew, whether it was through a Sunday phone call or a birthday card (with the important words underlined).
Ruth will be remembered at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 8, 2017, at the Beth Abraham Jacob Cemetery on Western Avenue in Guilderland , NY. Following the service, friends and family are invited to celebrate Ruth’s life at Mickey & Dawn’s home (7 Pinecrest Circle, Ravena, New York).
