Obituary of Ida Rous
Ida Silverman Rous, age 103, of Autumn Drive, Slingerlands, died peacefully Wednesday morning, September 6, 2017, at home.
Mrs. Rous was born in Manhattan and resided there until she moved to Brooklyn, and then to Albany 45 years ago. Although she was trained as a nurse, she never embarked on a nursing career. Subsequently, Mrs. Rous received secretarial training; her shorthand skills served her well but left everyone else in the family unable to read her phone messages. After many years of a career as one of the few women stockbrokers on Wall Street, she transitioned to part-time work when she married and achieved her dream of becoming a mother. After her husband retired, they enjoyed the opportunity to travel together extensively in the United States and abroad. Mrs. Rous had a love of learning, enjoyed taking many different kinds of classes, and relished the chance to try new things. In recent years, she enjoyed dining with her friends and relatives, learning and practicing languages, playing bridge, and time spent outdoors. Exercise and physical fitness were very important to Mrs. Rous; as recently as two years ago she exercised using the treadmill or stationary bicycle at least twice a week.
Mrs. Rous was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Louis Rous.
Mrs. Rous is survived by her beloved daughters, Susan Rous of Natick, Mass., and Deborah Rous of Halfmoon, NY. She leaves many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, a great grand niece, and several great grand nephews. Mrs. Rous also leaves her dear caretakers for whom she had affection and gratitude.
Services at Temple Israel 600 New Scotland Ave. Albany, on Friday, September 8, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Temple Israel Cemetery, Guilderland. The period of mourning will be observed at 40 Autumn Drive, Sunday afternoon from 12 to 5 p.m. and commencing again on Monday 3 to 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA, Hadassah, or a charity of one’s choice.
